We had to make difficult choices and we had to be disciplined in our storytelling strategies. We chose to focus on the emotional journey Allen went through, the pivotal relationships with men (all straight) whom he fell in love with, and the madness of his mother and of many of the friends around him. We wanted to capture a golden moment in the lives of a group of sexy young rebel poets and writers who gave birth to all we think of as 60s counter-culture, whose seeds were germinating in the supposedly conformist America of the 1950s.

How can you have a film about Allen Ginsburg and not feature his relationship with Burroughs?
